0 BYOBBBQ at the Butcher Bar

I bet you're wondering what the title of the post means? Well if you got confused, it means Butcher Bar is a BBQ restaurant that has a BYOB policy(BYOBBBQ, get it now).  Honestly, was a little skeptical at first, but it turned out awesome.  Actually, everything didn't just turn out awesome, it turned out to be amazing!!  Come along for a journey of fresh cut BBQ and delicious Beer.

Well, our story begins in Astoria, where I dined on a blistering cold Friday Night.  As we walked into the Butcher Bar, I noticed immediately this was a more intimate fresh Butcher BBQ, than other places I've been too.  When I say Intimate, I mean there's about 8 tables in the whole place, and each one was packed with delicious food, and happy patrons.  I noticed the meat in the window right away, and my mouth watered as to what I was going to order tonight.

We waited about a half hour for a table, which wasn't terrible, but really, we didn't want to go out in the cold again for awhile.  While waiting, I glanced over the menu, and realized how many options they have for anyone that comes to eat there.

At this point in time I should note, Butcher Bar does NOT have any beer/liquor for sale there, they have a BYOB policy, and charge 2.69 a person in order to allow you to drink there.  I picked up a 6-pack of Founders All Day IPA and a 6-pack of Speakeasy Prohibition Ale (btw the corner bodega has a surprisingly great beer selection). However, they do not limit you in what you can bring, so if wine is your choice, bring a bottle, if a good scotch of whisky is your choice, bring it.  You get my drift.

After, getting a table, we took some time to relax, have a beer, and really decide what we were getting to eat for dinner.  Eventually I decided on a smorgasbord of food...for myself (YES I SHARED). They have a large list of sandwiches, but the best part is that you can order meats from the butcher, by the 1/4 pound.  I wound up choosing the Butcher's Platter, which consisted of a 1/4 pound of any three meats, and two sides.  I went with a 1/4 pound of pulled pork, a 1/4 pound of brisket, and 1/4 pound of Philippine spiced sausage, with a side of Mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese.  It also came with cole slaw and pickles, which is always a nice touch, because really, who doesn't like coleslaw and pickles.

The pulled pork was delicious, however a little dry, the BBQ sauce it was in absolutely made up for it. Being a huge fan of Brisket, this one, blew my mind.  I did not even need a knife to cut a piece...it was THAT tender, and it melted in your mouth.  Drizzled some of their sweet and spicy BBQ sauce on it, it was heaven.  When I ordered the sausage, I was a little skeptical about it, but damn, that first bite, tasted like a meatball without the sauce.  Really tender, really juicy, really delicious.
As for the sides, mashed potatoes were delicious, they had a little potato skin and garlic mixed in, perfect combination.  Mac n' Cheese is always a hometown favorite for me, and this one was SUPER good.  Best of all, it had a little kick thanks to the paprika that was drizzled on top of it. Cole slaw and pickles were perfect as a good palate cleanser in between the different meats I was eating.  I do have to give Butcher two thumbs up on their GENEROUS portion of pickles.  Nicely done!

After a huge meal like that, I felt stuffed, until our waitress came by and gave us a piece of Grandma's Apple Pie on the house.  MM MM MMMM that was goooood. It had a nice crisp to it, real nice flavor, the caramel and powdered sugar on top just gave it that extra flare.  I feel the next time I come here, I'll order this regardless.

Overall, Butcher Bar is getting a 8.5 out of 10 from me.  The food was just straight delicious, BYOB was new to me, but turns out it actually works out for you in the long run.  The wait staff was extremely friendly as well.  I think my ONLY complaint for them is maybe investing in some heaters around the tables, being that it was a freeeeezing cold night out, and the door didn't close very fast, a cold draft kept sneaking in.  HOWEVER, if you're in the Astoria area, and want some real good BBQ, definitely check out the Butcher Bar.
